Timothy Z. Witmer inaugurated as professor of practical theology

On November 29, Westminster inaugurated Timothy Z. Witmer, D.Min., as professor of practical theology.  He is coordinator of the practical theology department at Westminster, and director of the M.Div. and Mentored Ministry programs.  The 10:30 a.m. ceremony was held in Rust Auditorium, Van Til Hall, on the Glenside, Pennsylvania campus.  Dr. Sinclair Ferguson introduced Professor Witmer, who delivered his inaugural address, “Seminary: A Place to Prepare Pastors?”  Dr. Manuel Ortiz delivered the charge to the inauguree, and Rev. Dr. Philip Ryken, trustee, led Professor Witmer in reaffirming the faculty vow.  Other Westminster faculty also participated in the ceremony.  A full story, including photos and audio of the address, is available online.

Professor Groves honored

With great honor and deep appreciation for Professor of Old Testament J. Alan Groves, the faculty and board of Westminster Theological Seminary have renamed the Westminster Hebrew Institute the J. Alan Groves Center for Advanced Biblical Research.  Professor Groves was presented with the honor at a ceremony on December 15.  He is executive director of the Center, which was established under his leadership in 1986.  The mission of the Center is to apply computing and related technology to the study and teaching of the Hebrew Bible and language.  Their most recent project is a collaboration with the Asia Bible Society on the Chinese Standard Bible, a fresh translation of the Bible into Mandarin Chinese.

Meet an alumnus

“To be a teacher of the next generation of the church is to touch the future of the church,” says Dr. Karen Jobes, ’89, ‘95.  In October, she was inaugurated as Gerald F. Hawthorne Professor of New Testament Greek and Exegesis at Wheaton College.  A commentary author, biblical studies professor, and member of the NIV/TNIV translation committee, she pursues the integration of devout Christian faith and academic excellence.  Read her profile to learn more about this outstanding graduate.
