Special edition eNews from Westminster Theological Seminary

So much is happening at Westminster, we just had to send you a supplemental eNews this month!

The truth about Da Vinci  On Good Friday, Westminster launched www.thetruthaboutdavinci.com, a response website to the best-selling novel by Dan Brown and forthcoming movie The Da Vinci Code.  "We have been struck by the great number of people whose faith has been shaken by the mixture of fact and fiction portrayed in this tale," says Dr. William Edgar, professor of apologetics and faculty coordinator of the project.  "We want to help them as they confront this phenomenon. While a number of 'rebuttal sites' exist, ours is meant to combine responses to distorted facts with our understanding of the spiritual and presuppositional issues that inform them."

Among the resources provided on the website are articles, audio, videos, and book recommendations that set the record straight and commend the historic Christian faith.  Additional features will be added soon.

More information about the purpose of the project is available at www.wts.edu.

Congratulations, class of 2006  Westminster's 77th Commencement will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, May 25, at Calvary Church of Souderton, Souderton, Pennsylvania.  Our speaker this year will be Rev. Herb Lusk, pastor of Greater Exodus Baptist Church in Philadelphia, and president and CEO of People for People, Inc.  All are invited!  Fiftieth reunion activities are planned for the class of 1956.  (Need a gift for a grad?  Click here to order a diploma frame or hardwood chair with Westminster's seal.)

Morning seminars (on the suburban Philadelphia campus) feature President Peter A. Lillback on "An Introduction to the Founding Faculty of Westminster" at 9:00; and Chancellor Samuel T. Logan Jr. on "The Day the Trustees Resigned: Early Westminster and Mainline Presbyterianism" at 10:15.  To complete the "heritage" theme, stop by President Lillback's office in Machen Hall after the seminars and sit at the newly-refinished table around which early faculty meetings were held!

Community prayer  April 26 has been designated a day of prayer for Professor J. Alan Groves, vice president for academic affairs, who has been diagnosed with cancer.  Please join us in praying for healing, and for grace, mercy, and sustenance for Al and his family.

Carrying the burden together  Last month, Westminster faculty and alumni participated in the second General Assembly of the World Reformed Fellowship in Johannesburg, South Africa.  Reformed leaders from 17 countries-many of whom are Westminster grads-gathered March 7-10 to focus on the theme "Masibambisane," a Zulu word which may be translated as "carrying the burden together."  Among the speakers were Westminster professors Peter Lillback, Manuel Ortiz, and Diane Langberg; and Alan White, vice president for institutional advancement.

"No matter what part of the world we consider, Westminster alumni are providing crucial leadership to the church there," said Dr. Samuel T. Logan Jr., Westminster's chancellor and professor of church history, and executive secretary of WRF.  "Fully half of those elected at the General Assembly to serve on the WRF Executive Committee are Westminster alumni."

Attention, Korean alumni!  The SaRang Center for Korean Missions and the Alumni Office invite you to a special homecoming event on Monday, May 8, on the Glenside, Pennsylvania campus.  The event begins at 11:30 am with a luncheon hosted by President Lillback.  Afternoon sessions include a faculty presentation about Westminster's strategy to respond to The Da Vinci Code and opportunities to connect with Westminster's Korean Student Fellowship and reorganize the U.S. Korean Alumni Association.  Sessions will end at 4:00 pm.  The Westminster Bookstore (great inventory at great prices!) will be open until 5:00.  RSVP by May 4 to alumni@wts.edu, and include your full name and the number of people attending with you.

Alumni events at denominational assemblies  All Westminster alums attending the General Assemblies of the OPC and PCA are invited to a special gathering at each of those events in June.  Please watch our online event listing for details as they are confirmed.  If you plan to attend, contact the Alumni Office at alumni@wts.edu.
